Confidence: seed. Zone ranges follow the Classic baseline Forever is built on. Quest density and exact level requirements should be re-checked in-game after launch.

How to use this route

Zone levels are ranges, not rules. A zone listed as 30–45 means "start around 30, leave when quests go grey." On launch week, the fastest route is usually the least crowded one, not the one with the best XP per quest.

If you are still deciding where to start, read the 1–20 launch route first.

1–20 in one line

Starting zone → level 10 → faction hub (Stormwind/Westfall or Orgrimmar/Barrens) → the 10–20 band. The full detail, including race-by-race starts, is in the 1–20 guide.

20–40: the choice-heavy stretch

This is where most players stall: too many zones, too little direction.

Alliance lanes

Band Zones Notes
20–30 Redridge, Duskwood, Wetlands, Ashenvale Duskwood chains into Raven Hill; Wetlands is quieter than Redridge.
30–40 Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace STV is the XP king and the gank capital. Arathi is calmer.

Horde lanes

Band Zones Notes
20–30 Stonetalon, Ashenvale, Hillsbrad, Thousand Needles Hillsbrad has dense quest hubs; Thousand Needles is spread out.
30–40 Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Desolace Same trade-off: STV for speed, Arathi for peace.

Dungeon checkpoints (20–40): Scarlet Monastery wings are the single best XP in the 30s. One clean Cathedral run beats an hour of contested questing. Uldaman starts paying off around 42.

40–50: the pre-raid ramp

  • Tanaris (40–50): Gadgetzan quests, Zul'Farrak at 44–54. Reliable and dense.
  • Feralas (40–50): quieter alternative; Dire Maul access later.
  • The Hinterlands (40–50): excellent quest density, contested on PvP rulesets.
  • Searing Gorge (43–50): Blackrock Depths is here. Start BRD around 52.
  • Badlands (35–45): Uldaman quests and a short leveling lane.

Dungeon checkpoints (40–50): Zul'Farrak (44–54) for XP per hour, Maraudon (46–55) for caster loot, Uldaman for quest rewards.

50–60: the last wall

  • Un'Goro Crater (48–55): dense, self-contained, good for solo.
  • Felwood (48–55): timbermaw and furbolg chains; watch for contested farms.
  • Winterspring (53–60): the classic final push, with cold weather gear if the ruleset has it.
  • Western/Eastern Plaguelands (51–60): Stratholme and Scholomance access; dense undead farms.
  • Burning Steppes (50–58): BRD and UBRS runs; elite quests.
  • Silithus (55–60): the last stretch before raid attunement.

Dungeon checkpoints (50–60): BRD (52–60) for pre-raid gear, LBRS/UBRS (55–60), then Dire Maul, Stratholme, and Scholomance at 58–60.

Rules that save more time than any route

  1. Do dungeon quest chains once, cleanly. Quest rewards from SM, Uldaman, ZF, and BRD beat most quest greens.
  2. Skip low-density quests. A 20-minute quest in a crowded zone is worse than grinding two levels in a quiet corner.
  3. Train only the spells you cast. Gold before 40 is a weapon budget, not a spell collection.
  4. Plan your hearth. Leveling speed is mostly travel time; bind to the hub you return to most.
  5. Do not fight for named mobs on launch day. Come back at off-peak, or move on.

Launch-week reality check

Every zone above will be more crowded than it was in Classic. Layers help, but the first 72 hours are still a scrum. If a zone is unplayable, swap to the quieter lane on the same band — the route is a map, not a script.
