Which Class Should You Level First?
A practical class picker for launch: leveling speed, group demand, gear competition, and the role you will actually enjoy at 60.
Confidence: community-tracked. Class balance and leveling feel follow the Classic baseline plus beta coverage. Forever's class changes can shift the details; the trade-offs below are the stable part.
The honest short answer
- Want the easiest solo leveling? Hunter or Warlock.
- Want instant groups? Tank or healer — Warrior, Druid, Priest, Paladin, Shaman.
- Want raid damage with the least gear competition? Mage, Warlock, or Hunter.
- Want to do everything on one character? Druid.
The comparison
| Class | Leveling | Group demand | Gear competition | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Slow | Very high (tank) | High | Best if you want to tank; painful solo start. |
| Paladin | Steady | High (healer) | Medium | Safe, durable, and always wanted as a healer. |
| Hunter | Fastest | Medium | Low | The solo player's class. Pet does the work. |
| Rogue | Medium | Medium | High | Strong single-target; thin defenses. |
| Priest | Medium | Very high (healer) | Low for healers | Never wait for a group; Shadow needs hit gear. |
| Shaman | Medium | High (healer) | Medium | Totems make you the group's utility pick. |
| Mage | Medium | Medium | Medium | Portals, food, AoE farming; contested farm spots. |
| Warlock | Fast | Medium | Low | Sustain and free mount at 40. |
| Druid | Medium | High (any role) | High (feral/caster split) | The most flexible class in the game. |
Pick by how you actually play
You play solo most of the time. Hunter, Warlock, or Mage. All three level without depending on groups; Hunter is the fastest, Warlock the most forgiving, Mage the best farmer.
You want to be the person groups need. Warrior (tank) or Priest (healer). You will never wait for a dungeon, and you will be blamed for every bad pull — that is the deal.
You want flexibility. Druid. Bear tank, cat DPS, or healer on one character. The cost is gear competition and a messy bank.
You want raid damage without loot drama. Mage, Warlock, or Hunter. Caster and hunter gear is less contested than plate and leather melee gear.
You want PvP. Rogue or Mage for control; Warrior with a pocket healer; Shaman for burst. Every class can PvP, but the skill ceiling differs.
What we would pick for launch week
- Priest or Paladin if you want groups and a calm leveling path.
- Hunter if you want to reach 60 fast and farm gold.
- Warrior if you want to tank and do not mind a slow start.
- Druid if you cannot decide and want to keep every door open.
The one mistake to avoid
Do not pick a class for its raid performance before you have leveled it to 40. Leveling is 80% of your first two weeks, and a class you hate at level 20 does not become fun at 60.
Next steps
- Read the 1–60 route for where to level.
- Check the BiS checklists for what to farm at 60.
- Read dual spec at 40 before you commit your second spec.
