1–20 on Launch Day: The Route That Actually Works

Starting zones by race, the level-10 meetup, and the 10–20 push through Westfall or the Barrens — plus the bottlenecks nobody warns you about.

Confidence: seed. The zone structure is drawn from the Classic baseline Forever is built on. Quest density and XP numbers should be re-checked in-game after launch.

Before the character screen

Decide three things before you log in, because changing them later costs an evening:

  • Faction and ruleset with your group — see the start-here guide.
  • Starting zone you can tolerate for four hours.
  • Addons. A quest/map addon is close to mandatory for launch-week density. Set it up before the queue, not after.

1–10: where each race starts

Race Starting zone Level 10 handoff
Human Elwynn Forest Stormwind
Dwarf / Gnome Dun Morogh Ironforge → Stormwind
Night Elf Teldrassil Darnassus → Stormwind
Orc / Troll Durotar Orgrimmar
Tauren Mulgore Thunder Bluff → Orgrimmar
Undead Tirisfal Glades Undercity → Orgrimmar

Two launch-week realities:

  1. Starting zones are the most crowded maps in the game on day one. Named mobs and quest items will be contested. Do not expect a clean run.
  2. The 1–10 stretch is short. If your group scatters now, regrouping at 10 costs less time than rerolling to share a spawn.

The 10–20 band is where the launch is won

This is the first stretch with real choice, and the first place a bad plan shows up.

Alliance: Westfall is the default. It feeds the Deadmines (roughly 17–26) and has dense quest loops around Sentinel Hill. If Westfall is a warzone, Loch Modan and Darkshore are quieter alternatives with decent density.

Horde: the Barrens is the default — long, spread out, and crowded. Wailing Caverns (roughly 17–24) sits right there. If the Barrens is unbearable, Silverpine Forest is the calmer lane.

Practical rules for this band:

  • Follow the quest chain, not every quest. Skip low-density quests; a quest that takes 20 minutes in a congested zone is worse than grinding two levels in a quiet corner.
  • Do the dungeon once for the quest rewards. Ragefire Chasm and the Deadmines both have quest chains with strong early rewards. One clean run, not five.
  • Do not train every spell. Gold is tight before 20; buy the spells you actually cast, bank the rest for a weapon at 20.

Pacing (rough, not gospel)

  • Normal pace, reading quests: about 15–20 hours to 20.
  • Experienced, skipping text: about 8–10 hours.
  • Launch week with queues and contested tags: add a few hours no matter what.

These are estimates from the Classic loop, not measured Forever numbers. Treat them as planning ranges.

Do not do these on day one

  • Do not vendor every green item if you have an enchanter in the group — those greens are enchanting materials.
  • Do not fight for a single named mob in a crowded zone. Come back at off-peak, or move on.
  • Do not level two crafting professions before 20. One gathering profession is enough until your gold flow stabilizes.

The one-hour setup that saves the week

Before launch, spend an hour on:

  1. Keybinds and action bars you can use without looking.
  2. The quest/map addon, configured and tested.
  3. A bank alt plan — where your materials go, who holds the gold.

That hour is worth more than any leveling trick. For the 20–40 stretch, the professions guide covers what to level while you grind, and dual spec at 40 explains when your build opens up.
